Shooting Exercise Instructions
The Shooting exercise needs to be completed following the
outline provided below. Your mentor must be a graduate of a Hunters Safety
Course and over the age of 21. I need a link to the video showing the
completion of your shooting exercise. Try not to email me the video if possible
as the compression required to send them typically removes so much detail that
they are not usable in this context. An email with a link to a YouTube post, or
sharing the video via google drive works very well. If you have another source
to share the video, we can try it, but we may have to revert to one of these
sources. If you put the video on youtube, I recommend posting it privately and
once the class is over you can take it down. i may have to request access to view the video, if so, no big deal i will just request access and you will receive an email that will let you allow me to view the video.
The video needs to not only show you performing your
shooting exercise, but also show your handling of your firearm as you complete
your exercise, load and unload your firearm and move between the different
shooting positions at the range. Do not cut these portions out of your video or
you may be required to resubmit your exercise, it is best to just start
recording and do not stop the video until you are done with your last
shot.
We are looking to see that you handle your firearm safely
between shots and positions. The different shooting positions should not
be filmed using a truck or table as a rest, but a set of shooting sticks or a tripod
is ok.
The Shooting Exercise needs to be completed at 50 feet with
a 22 long rifle. It can be equipped with a scope and can be any action type
(single shot, lever, bolt, semi auto etc.). There are alternate
instructions for using a shotgun, muzzleloader, or archery equipment available,
it is preferable that you use the standard 22 long rifle instructions though,
message me for details. You can use any standard sized target or you can
print a target off from the UDWR website at:
Elk - https://wildlife.utah.gov/pdf/hunter_ed/elk.pdf
Standard - https://wildlife.utah.gov/pdf/hunter_ed/bullseye.pdf
Your mentor is responsible to help you identify any areas
that you may be performing any unsafe actions and to help you identify safe
alternatives for you to practice and integrate into your routine when handling
firearms. You can use the elk or bullseye target provided on the
hunters ed website but any standard target is acceptable. If you have any
problems or need an accommodation concerning the firearm or testing
please let me know and we will work something out.
Lee Kay Range
If you plan to go to the Lee Kay Shooting Range to complete
your shooting Exercise, please contact me or the range prior to going. Lee Kay
has changed their policies and will not accept walk on shooters to the hunter’s
education range. An appointment must be made with the range to utilize that
range.
Law Enforcement and Military
Active Duty Military, Reserve or Guard, Veterans and Active
or retired LEO's please message me for other options.
Instructions for completing the Live Fire Exercise
Utah Hunter Education Independent Live-Fire Exercise video
submission checklist:
This checklist is the basic criteria that your course
instructor will use to evaluate your video submission.
You must include all of the elements listed below in your
video or you will not pass. You must have your mentor present for the entire
exercise. Your mentor can assist with filming the video and/or provide you with
instructions and supervision during your live-fire exercise to ensure safety
and inclusion of all required elements. Video footage segments should focus on the safe handling of the
firearm before shooting, during changes in position, and after shooting the
target.
Mentor is responsible to ensure safe firearm handling at all
times and should be especially watchful for proper muzzle control in the case
of a misfire or malfunction during shooting. When transitioning from one
position to another, the firearm should be unloaded with the action open and
the safety on, with the muzzle always pointed in a safe direction.
Keep the muzzle of the firearm pointed in a safe direction
at all times!
